The Best Bits of Burleigh Heads, QLD

December 18, 2017

I am a brand new resident of Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, Australia. My partner and I decided to try a new part of Australia to live in, after spending 2 years abroad.

We chose Burleigh Heads to live because of the beautiful weather, great surf and awesome community vibe. But, we have found a few more treasures amongst this town and the surrounding beach side hubs. From hidden back alley bars, weekend markets and secret beach hangouts - this neck of the Gold Coast has everything you may need.

So, here are my best bits of Burleigh - let me know if you love them too!

Burleigh Head National Park

I walk through this beautiful park most mornings. The wildlife and ocean view trails are breathtaking and you may encounter a lizard or bush turkey as well as some stunning wild birdlife on your trek. All of which are super friendly, just make sure you watch your step as the lizards love to sun bake on the paths. Bring your togs and go off the path when you reach Tallebudgera creek for a beautiful dip in turquoise waters, best enjoyed in the mornings when foot traffic is low and the water is at it's calmest.

Burleigh Hill

You will walk up Burleigh Hill before you enter the National Park. Bring a picnic and some bubbles and chill on the grassy knoll over looking the gorgeous rocks and surf, any day of the week. Sunday's are the most popular, get there early afternoon to secure a nice spot under the Pandanus Trees. The perfect place to catch up with friends and chill out.

Love Child Market

Located just down the road in Miami, this awesome clothing store has a Sunday food market each week in their alley way from 4pm to 8pm. Milkshakes, Po' boy's, Wood fire pizzas, dumplings, ramen, cakes and more make appearances here every Sunday and damn the food is delicious. Check out their fashion before you eat all the food - or you'll be hard pressed trying on those jeans.

The Village Markets

Speaking of markets - The Village Markets bring you amazing homewares, fashion, art, knick knacks, food and coffee every 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 8:30 am to 1pm. There are always talented musicians playing whilst you wander around the stalls with a fresh coffee in hand and there are new things to see each market day.

Burleigh Heads Bowling Club

Barefoot bowls every weekend is the main calling card for the younger crowd, I have also heard that this place gets a bit rowdy on a Saturday night? I haven't yet wandered in here looking for a night spot, so I can't confirm.

But, a Saturday spent with a group of friends playing a game I have no idea about, whilst enjoying the sun is always a winner and an Australian past-time.

Social Brew

My top pic for a morning coffee, brunch and lunch.

They have great food options, which are always fresh and they cold press their juice concoctions in-house daily which is always a treat.

Grab something to take-away and enjoy on the beach or sit under their lush mini hanging forest and and take a minute out from the sun.

The Fruit Shop Burleigh

The best juices and smoothies in town, in my opinion and many others it seems by the look of the line every other afternoon. I get my juice in the morning and grab a snack pack of fresh cut watermelon to enjoy after my walk.

You can pick up a variety of fresh fruit with your juice of the day.

Lockwood

Firstly you need to find the red door down Justin's Lane and then of course in true 'hidden bar' fashion, you need to text the number on the door.  It's a cute touch and reminds me of my home town, Melbourne and all the hidden gems down there.

Once you enter you'll find a cosy lit bar with sharp dressed, friendly bartenders and some great tunes playing by bands like The Doors, John Fogerty and Jimmi Hendrix. This place is perfect for an after dinner cocktail and also if you are on a date, you'll earn some serious cred.

NightJar

A Sailor Jerry painted bar that has a laid back vibe and great drink deals.

Aside the great value, it is the atmosphere here that is awesome. It is a relaxed, fun loving bar and live music just kicks that up a notch. This place is a good time and is caters to the easy going crowd.

You can also order food from surrounding eateries and pair that craft beer with a pizza from Tom Ugly's, taco's from Wahoo's and snacks from Red Hot Cod. Get in early, it is a small bar and it fills up quick - I think the best time to check out this place is late afternoon from 5pm.

Burleigh Heads    Beach

This goes without saying really... as we are all kind of here because we wanted to live by this beach or visit it. Burleigh Heads Beach is lovely, protected and just a dream to surf, swim or sit by. The beach is patrolled for families and kids by the point and the rest is perfect for competent swimmers and families with older kids. Enjoy the pristine sand and stunning water nearly every day, all year round.

So, that is my list and it is growing by the day. Let me know what I need to check out and your favourite bit of Burleigh Heads in the comments below.
